Bartholomew Roberts (Barti Ddu) 1682-1722

Born in Casnewydd Bach (Little Newcastle) Bartholomew was a pirate born as John Roberts. He is first recorded in 1718 when he was the mate on a Barbados sloop.He raided ships off the Americas and West Africa, and his success was indicated by his haul of 470 ships. He was killed in a sea-battle with a professional pirate captor and his body was thrown overboard.
